I wrote topics (Capital Cities, Zoo Animals, Foods, etc.) across the top of the whiteboard. Pairs of monks then chose a topic, to which there were to write thee major points for each topic, and three details for of the three major points.
Students love to write on the whiteboard. Even better yet when they can work in pairs! This is very interactive, student centered strategy, which carried with it the added bonus that I could quickly check for understanding.
